In a method of manufacturing a roller or needle bearing cage, an apertured strip 1a, the end portions 5, 6 of which define complementary parts of an aperture 12, is rolled to shape and clamped between jaws 2, 2<SP>1</SP> each of which has an electrode portion 29, an insulated spacer member 14 is inserted in the aperture 12 and resistance butt welding of the rim portions 7, 8 carried out, the spacer 14 serving to limit the amount of upset of the rim portions. The clamping pressure is reduced to allow withdrawal of the spacer and finally released after cooling. The spacer may be tapered or parallel sided (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) and may be recessed to accommodate roller-retaining lips on the aperture edges. A locating stud 23 serves to locate the strip accurately for the welding process. The abutting faces 9, 11 of the rim portions may be offset from the median plane of the aperture 12 so that any internal weld bead formed in the aperture is disposed at a position in which it does not contact the convex end face of the needle or roller. The clamping jaw faces are recessed (Fig. 2, not shown) so that pressure is only applied to the rim portions of the strip, and the electrode is similarly arranged (Fig. 3, not shown) to apply pressure and welding current only to the rim portions.</p> |
