The device for taking up an overhead cable (12) of a drag lift is associated with a pulley (10) for supporting the cable. A plate (40) adjacent to the pulley (10) retains the derailed cable and guides the latter as it falls towards a U-shaped slide (46) which takes up the cable. This slide (46) is arranged for disengaging and retaining a fastener (16) for a towing pole when the fastener driven by the cable passes over the slide (46).
