1537460 Bearings GLACIER METAL CO Ltd 19 March 1976 [20 March 1975] 11685/75 Heading F2A A thrust bearing comprises a housing containing an annular ring of thrust pads 14 each mounted to be capable of tilting on its own pillar 12, the pillars being located axially against a wall of the housing without being capable of tilting, and circumferentially by a cage ring 10, and the pads being located circumferentially by their mounting on their pillars. The pillars are located in apertures in the ring 10. There may be a rubber pad between the pillars and the wall. The rear face of each pad contains a recess to accommodate the end of the pillar, and either the pad or the pillar has a radially directed rib 15 to permit tilting movement of the pad. Each pad may be formed or provided with flanges 17, 18 for circumferential location. A stop plate 19 is also provided. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4), each pillar comprises a piston and cylinder arrangement 23, 24. An internal chamber 27 closed by an elastomeric diaphragm 28 is filled with hydraulic fluid under pressure through a line 32. Any fluid leaking past the diaphragm can be withdrawn from a space 33 through a line 34. A common source provides fluid to the chambers 27 in all the thrust pillars so that each will have the same load urging the member 23 away from the wall 13 towards the underside of the pad 14. Thus each pad automatically takes its equal share of total thrust load. |
