The mechanism adjusts the height and angle of a bed etc. pivoting on a supporting surface. It comprises a rack (1a, 1b) combined with a ram (25), the rack hinging at the top on the bed frame, while its teeth engage with a pin fixed to the supporting surface (15). It hinges at the bottom on a link sliding horizontally and spring-loaded so as to hold the rack against the pin. The other end of the link hinges on a lever whose fulcrum point is fixed to the supporting surface. The ram rod has a cross-member (26), whose ends (16a, 16b) hinge on the bed frame. The positions of the hinges on the latter are determined by the centre of gravity of the frame when in use.
