Phosphono:carboxylic acid-alcohol reaction products - useful as sequestrants of higher calcium-binding capacity, threshold inhibitors, sludge fluidisers, corrosion inhibitors and pptn. retarders

The reaction products (I) obtd. by mixing phosphonocarboxylic acids (II) with mono- and/or poly-ols (III) in a (II): (III) molar ratio of 50-1:1-50, are used to condition water (as threshold inhibitors) and to fluidise inorganic sludges (viz. DS 2061838, DT 2141884 and DT 2225645), as corrosion inhibitors, as pptn. retarders and as sequesterants. (I) have improved Ca-binding capacity than (II) alone. (II) are of formula (HO)2P- (R)-CO2H (where R is H or (substd.) alkyl, alkenyl, or alkynyl of =4C, aryl, cycloalkyl, or aralkyl or a gp. of formula: -CH(R')-CHR"R"' (where R' is H, 1-4C alkyl, or CO2H; R" is H or CH3 and R"' is CO2H)). (III) may be n-alkanols, cyclic alcohols, polyols such as ethylene glycerine, pentaerythritol and mannitol.
