The transfer mechanism includes a pivoting arm with a ram-operated clamp (103). The mechanism presents and positions tools in a mobile magazine of a machine tool with automatic tool-change. Tools which are demountably secured in receivers (12) are handled, and the introduction of the pincers (103) enables the arm to pivot without receivers if required. The receivers (12) themselves are secured demountably on the magazine. The arm pivots about an axis (62) which is parallel to the movement of the magazine, and between active positions respectively associated with the magazine and a tool-change mechanism. As the arm approaches the pot a tapered hammer-head (109) enters a trapezoidal channel (107, 112) to be retained by the clamps.
