Seal used between ingot mould and its baseplate - made of cardboard cut to exact shape of bottom end of mould

The seal is made of compact- or corrugated-cardboard, which is cut to the exact size and shape of the bottom end surface of the mould; and the seal prevents moltent steel from running out of the mould where the latter rests on its baseplate. The interal or external contour of the seal may not reach, or may project beyond, the internal or external periphery of the end surface of the mould. The seal may be folded or cut to match one or more holes in the baseplate, where the holes are used for bottom pouring. A gutter may be fixed in the seal, or a locating rail made of metal or non-combustible material. The seal may also include an anti-splash device, or compartments contg. casting powder.
