The profiling roller has a finishing groove with flank angle and core radius which corresponds to flank angle and core radius of the thread to be ground and at least one pre-cutting groove with reduced cutting depth and increased cutting radius. The pre-cutting groove is located at one end of the roller. The width (x) of the openings of the pre-cutting grooves (3', 4', 5') are equal at the outside dia. (7) of the thread (8) which is to be cut. The flank angle of the precutting grooves are enlarged progressively.
