A vacuum switch has elements to extinguish a direct current. The vacuum discharge arc discharges capacitors directly. The switch is used in l.v. circuits. The capacitor is charged to the opposite polarity to the current flow. The extinguishing capacitor is connected to a control electrode (4) which is mounted in the capacitor gap. It is insulated from and concentric with the fixed switch contact (8). It acts simultaneously as a support for the evacuating pump. It also acts as a screen.
