The grill unit is provided with an air baffle plate (13) which forms a hot air guide shaft (14) at a distance from the protective hood (11) which is mounted above the grill chamber and contains a ventilator for drawing off the hot air. This ventilator (15) which is designed as a hot air circulator is thus set between the protective hood and the air baffle plate (13), with the guide shaft (14) opening into the grill chamber (12) in the area of the first and last heating elements (9). A travelling grid (6) supports the food. In this way the hot air which is constantly drawn off from the grill chamber is fed back to the chamber where it is directed straight onto the food. The heating elements are thus used more efficiently and heat losses reduced to a minimum.
