The apparatus comprises a driven pintle chain (1) and a transport chain (3) which move at approximately equal height, parallel to each other and at a contact-free distance apart, along a common path section. The transport chain is equipped with centring apparatuses (5) arranged to be rotatable about their own axis, at the same distance apart as the pintles (4) of the pintle chain (1), and provided with gripping jaws. On the common path section, the pintles and the centring apparatus each move in such a manner that they are approximately opposite on a common axis. Furthermore, means (15, 17) are attached for conveying the hollow bodies from the pintles (4) to the centring apparatuses (5) and from the latter to the pintles. A control roller is connected via a cam (12) to gripping jaws of the centring apparatuses (5), in order to close and open the latter. A drive (13) serves to rotate the centring apparatuses, while a coupling, which can be switched off, is provided between the pintle chain and the transport chain to drive the chains in the same direction and in a synchronised manner over the common path section. <IMAGE>
