The two-way, portable radio has a receiving antenna including a coil (104) and a ferrite core (105) located within a casing (102). A telescopic transmitting antenna (108) is also normally located within the casing. The transmitting antenna may be extended automatically upon actuation of a transmission button (110). The transmitting antenna (108) may be used both for transmitting and for receiving. A switch (113) actuated automatically when the transmitting antenna is fully extended disconnects the receiving antenna from the receiving part (107) of the appts. and connects the transmitting antenna to the receiving part. A switch (114) actuated by a button (110) disconnects the telescopic antenna from the receiving part (107) and connects it to the transmitting part (112) so long as the button is depressed.
