The sandling control for the high speed train has a sand hopper closed by an airtight cover and coupled to the compressed air supply line (13). The airstream is split into a main stream to pass through the sand and keep it free flowing, and a bypass to pass directly into the sading pipe. A heater (15) in the bottom of the hopper prevents build up of moisture and freezing. By altering to ratio of the main and bypass flows, using an electromagnetic dosing valve (20) the rate of sanding can be accurately controlled. This enables the sanding rate to be adjusted to give optimum braking and traction at different speeds.
