PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent cavitation associated with piston motions of a hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: This hydraulic shock absorber includes a cylinder 12, piston 13, and a piston rod 14. The piston 13 is provided internally with liquid passages 28 and 29 extending in the axial direction for making the left chamber 23a communicate with right chamber 23b. The valve mechanisms 30 and 31 installed in these liquid passages 28 and 29 are composed of valve seats 32 and 33, valve elements 34 and 35, coil springs 36 and 37 to energize the valve elements 34 and 35, spring receiver 38 and 39 on which the coil springs 36 and 37 abut, and valve element shock absorbing mechanisms 40 and 41 installed between the valve elements 34 and 35 and spring receivers. The shock absorbing mechanisms 40 and 41 decelerate the valve opening operations of the valve elements 34 and 35 associated with the reciprocation of the piston 13 and suppress the generation of cavitation in the passages 28 and 29.
