1536377 Electro-chemical cell for chlorine manufacture ENERGY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATES 19 Oct 1977 [24 Nov 1976] 43536/77 Heading C7B [Also in Division H1] In operating an electro-chemical cell 1 in which chlorine is generated at at least one electrode 4, e.g. a Zn chlorine battery or a chlorine manufacturing cell, its housing is filled with sufficient electrolyte such that the autogenous pressure is at least sufficient to liquefy the chlorine generated and that there is no space for gas accumulation, before imposing current across the electrodes, and causing electrolyte to move to prevent liquid chlorine accumulation at the electrodes. As shown the cell 1 comprises at least two electrodes 4, 5 for chlorine and Zn separated by a cation permselective membrane 6, a first electrolyte reservoir 3 connected to the chlorine electrode compartment by first conduit 8 and with means e.g. bulb 15 and valve 16 to vent gas other than chlorine, a second reservoir 2 connected to first by second conduit 13 and to chlorine electrode compartment by third conduit 7 and means e.g. pump 14 for causing recirculating or flow of electrolyte. |
