1536248 Suture packages ETHICON Inc 9 March 1977 [10 March 1976] 09897/77 Heading A5R [Also in Division B8] A package for a double-armed suture having a pledget 16, i.e. a cushioning pad to prevent the suture strand from cutting into the tissue, slidably attached to the suture strand adjacent one of the needles 14, comprises a suture storage compartment and a flap 20 extending from the storage compartment and having an opening receiving the ends of the suture strand, said opening having a size and shape such that when the suture is withdrawn from the storage compartment, the pledget is restrained by an edge of the opening and slidably displaced along the length of the suture until the latter is fully withdrawn, whereby the pledget is automatically centred between the needles. Fig. 2 shows a package comprising two pairs of superimposed suture compartments formed by heat sealing three panels (10, 11, 12), Fig. 1 (not shown), along seal lines 17, the lower said panel being integral with the flap 20 which is provided with four openings 13a, 13b, 13c, 13d for receiving the respective sutures. Each opening comprises a semi-circular portion (28), Fig. 5 (not shown), and an aperture (27) connected together by an arcuate slot (26); the suture strand passes through the aperture (27) while the pledget is restrained by the straight edge (30) of the semi-circular portion. In a modification, Fig. 6, the opening comprises two apertures 27 connected by an arcuate slot 26. The flap 20 may be folded forward along a fold line 19 and the package placed in a sleeve (18), Fig. 7 (not shown), and hermetically sealed in an outer envelope (31). In Fig. 9 (not shown) the flap 20 is omitted and the suture passes through an opening in the wall of the suture compartment. The panels (10, 11, 12) are suitably made of paperboard, plastics or metal foil. |
