PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent generation of zig-zag defects by forming gap parts between a first member and a second member in which a liquid crystal is not filled. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element is provided with a liquid crystal 1, a first member 2a and a second member 2b located almost in parallel with each other so as to hold the liquid crystal 1 in between and electrodes 3a, 3b located so as to hold the liquid crystal 1 in between and drives the liquid crystal 1 by applying it a voltage via respective electrodes 3a, 3b. Furthermore, gap parts S are formed between the first member 2a and the second member 2b in which the liquid crystal 1 is not filled. Namely, the gap parts S are formed in a gap between the first member 2a and the second member 2b in which the liquid crystal 1 is not filled. Consequently, even if the volume of the liquid crystal 1 shrinks in the case the liquid crystal element is cooled, generation of zig-zag defects is reduced and excellent display quality is maintained.
