1536143 Protection means for Na-S cells UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 25 June 1976 [22 May 1975] 22388/75 Addition to 1529854 Headings H1B and H1N An electric cell having a compartment for a liquid anode 5, e.g. sodium, a compartment for a liquid cathode 4, e.g. sulphur, a solid electrolyte 3 (e.g. #-alumina) and including sensing means adapted to be responsive to the temperature of the liquid anode and arranged to open circuit the cell upon the occurrence of an abnormally high liquid anode temperature, e.g. 450‹ C. and/or anode current. The sensing means 19, Fig. 3, may comprise an argon filled bellows 20 in which the gas expands in the event of an abnormal temperature in the surrounding liquid anode thus separating switch contacts 24 and 26 and causing the cell to open circuit. The sensing means may further comprise first and second electrically conducting parts 30 and 27, Fig. 2 in one of its terminals, separated by an insulating portion 29 and which are connected by heating coil 36 in series with the first and second parts of the terminal so that in the event of an abnormally high anode current passing through the switch the heating means causes the gas in the bellows to expand and separate switch contacts 24 and 26 to cause the cell to open circuit. |
