1536675 I C engine combustion chambers DAIMLER BENZ AG 12 Nov 1975 [28 Nov 1974] 46715/75 Heading F1B A 5 to 10 kV source is connected to an electrode 11, 21a, 21b in an engine combustion chamber and the cylinder head 16, 26 is earthed so that an electric field E is produced in the chamber. The field, without producing substantial quantities of additional ions, influences the combustion in the chamber by causing the positive ions produced in the combustion reaction to be accelerated towards the chamber walls. The electrode may be provided by the fuel injection nozzle 28 or the walls of the pre-combustion chamber 27 and the connecting passage to the main chamber. A heat storage ball supported in a diesel engine pre-combustion chamber may provide the electrode. The electrode potential may be constant or vary in dependence on piston position or crank-shaft angle.
