8Hydrophilic, oxygen permeable contact lens

A contact lens which when saturated with water has oxygen permeability of greater than 500 centibarrers and a receding contact angle with water of less than 35 DEG . The lens is formed of a polymer containing from 20 to 80 weight percent of repeating units of the structure <IMAGE> where -R is -H or CH3 and R1 contains from 2 to 10 carbon atoms and at least one polar group. In a preferred aspect -R1 is -CH2CH2OH or -CH2CHOHCH3. The polymer also contains from 80 to 20 weight percent of repeating units of the structure <IMAGE> where -R2 is -H or -CH3 and n is 1 to 4.
