The fuel consumption of an internal combustion engine can be improved by preheating the air supply with the exhaust gases. The exhaust silencer (1) supports an inner pipe (2) by small branch pipes (4, 5). Air flows in through the branch pipes (4), is heated by the exhaust gases and then flows out through the pipe (5) to the engine intake manifold. An alternative method of pre-heating the air supply is to install a coil of pipe in the silencer. Water flows through coil and is evaporated by the heat of the exhaust gases. The steam thus produced is then fed into the engine intake.
|
