The device comprises a cylinder (5) which deposits the sheets (3) vertically on a table (8), a first stop (9) which can be moved axially on this table with the aid of a motor (10) and a second stop which can be retracted. The latter is formed by two elements (12, 13) which can be moved independently of each other along the axis of advance of the stack of sheets and perpendicular to this axis. A stack of a predetermined number of sheets can be isolated between the first stop (9) and the lower element (12) and be removed from the table (8), while the upper element (13) serves as a stop for the new stack being formed. This device is integrated into an automatic printing and binding installation. <IMAGE>
