A programmed control unit provides the necessary control of information transfer between the modules, e.g. high voltage stage, heating stage, etc. of an X-ray generator. The four modules of an X-ray generator are coupled to a central controller (5), by a number of common lines. Multi bit address lines (A) allow a specific unit to be selected and information to be transmitted over a bidirectional data bus (I). Status data (M) is transmitted in a similar way. The programme is provided from a register held in the main control unit.
