The gripping device is coupled onto the shaft of a roller blind, roller shutter door, or roller grille. It consists of a disk (1) which is arranged on a shaft (14) and which has one or more essentially radially outwardly directed slots (2) as retainer or retainers for blocking members (3) freely movable therein. In the event of a predetermined speed being exceeded, the blocking members (3) in the slots (2) displace radially outwards and lead, in co-operation with a limit stop (8, 9) of the housing, to the blocking effect. So that this blocking of the shaft (14) with the roller blind does not take place with a jolt, a slip clutch (15, 15a, 15b) is arranged as damping member between the shaft (14) and the disk (1), its coupling half (15a) connected to the disk (1) being acted upon by a pretensioned disk spring (saucer spring) (18) supported on an abutment (20) of the shaft (14). The pressure of the disk spring (18) is transmitted to the coupling half (15a) via a support ring (19) connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the shaft (14), and via a slide bearing (19a) arranged between the support ring and the coupling half (15a). <IMAGE>
