The engine has a crankshaft (13) which is driven by a reciprocating piston (18) through a connecting rod. Two rotary pistons (3, 8) revolve eccentrically in two cylinders (4). They are connected by a common shaft (11). Fuel air mixture enters (2) the first rotary cylinder in which first stage compression takes place. The mixture then transfers to the reciprocating cylinder in which a second stage of compression takes place and a first stage of expansion occurs. The partly burnt gases pass into the second rotary cylinder in which a second stage of expansion takes place. The direct connection between the two rotary pistons simplifies construction and leaves the reciprocating piston to provide the useful output while the second rotary piston drives the first.
