Faults are removed during the mfr. of smooth or textured filament yarns from synthetic high polymers. During prodn. a fault which may be inherent or caused during the process of treatment, is detected by a device which puts out a tensional signal. This is used to cause a tension-controlled mechanical thread detector to respond by energising a yarn shear. Specifically the device for generating the tensional signal on the appearance of a fault in the thread, forms an obstruction. A yarn build-up of short duration or a frictional peak is set up at this point, and causes a falling off of tension. System eliminates slubs, knots, built up fly which may be present in the supply spools for the prodn. of false twist textured high polymer (e.g. polyester or polyamide) yarns. The process can also be used for yarns textured by blow nozzles followed by stuffer tube from which the banked up yarn is not drawn out correctly.
