PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a weight balancing device for an elevator capable of shortening the stop time required for the operation for compensating a change of the car weight and applicable to an elevator traveling at a long distance. SOLUTION: In a rope type elevator, at least any one of a car 2 and a balancing weight 3 is provided with an air resistance mechanism 7 for balancing the apparent weight of the car with that of the balancing weight by increasing the air resistance with the elevating operation of the car or the balancing weight to increase the apparent weight. This air resistance mechanism 7 is operated to increase the air resistance when elevating the elevator, and increases the apparent weight of the car or the weight balance to take a balance of the apparent weight of the car 2 with that of the balancing weight 3.
