In a food-slicing machine having a material carriage (4), a circular blade (1) with an electric drive motor (2) and an automatic depositing device which deposits the sliced material in two coordinate directions and which has a controllable conveying device (5, 6, 7) and/or a movable depositing plate (9, 10), a sensor device (11, 12, 13) is provided which scans the diameter of the material to be sliced (3) and is connected to the control system (8) of the depositing device. The sensor device contains a measuring device (12, 13) for the displacement path of the material carriage (4), which can be actuated by means of a sensor (11) which responds to changes in the current or the rotating speed of the drive motor (2). Incorporating the diameter of the material to be sliced into the control signals of the control system of the depositing device ensures that the pieces of material to be sliced which are deposited overlap one another by the same amount whatever the diameter of the material to be sliced, that the depositing plate is fully utilised from one edge to the other and that the depositing pattern is optically uniform. <IMAGE>
