The invention concerns a method for artificial drying of the roots of a tree by stopping at least one of its vital functions by mechanical, chemical and/or biological treatment. The previously known treatment measures have always been directed to the root end of the tree. The quality of the tree obtained has been inferior to the quality of a tree whose roots have been dried naturally. It has now surprisingly been found that the quality of the tree is considerably improved by means of the mechanical, chemical and/or biological treatment being directed at the top of the tree. According to the method, the tree's access to nutrients can be prevented by removing the bark and the inner bark layer from the crown. The vital functions of the needles can also be stopped by means of microorganisms such as fungi and/or chemicals, the roots of the tree being dried almost in a natural manner.
