There may be included in the glass the anions Ce', Br', F' or I' and the cations present may be Ge, Si, P, B, As, Sb and Ti. The fibre may be made by decomposing mixed halide materials on the interior of a glass tube to give a vitreous deposit, collapsing the tube and then drawing to a fibre. The propellant for carrying the halide materials may be chlorine, halides or inert gas or mixtures of these. The heating may be provided by a zone (e.g. formed by a resistively heated Pt tube) passing along the outside of the rotating glass tube. Stepwise RI or gradient RI fibres can be made.
