1535568 Ziegler catalyst deactivation in high pressure ethylene polymerization SOC CHIMIQUE DES CHARBONNAGES 26 Feb 1976 [28 Feb 1975] 07682/76 Heading C3P Ethylene is polymerized in a continuous process at pressure above 500 bars and temperatures above 160‹ C., in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst, the polymerization being terminated by injection, in the molten state or in suspension or solution in a hydrocarbon, of a deactivator which is an alkali or alkaline earth metal or Zn salt of a carboxylic acid. The deactivator may be added at the exit to the polymerization reactor or at the inlet of product/monomer separators (from which recovered monomer may be recycled). Typical examples refer to the high pressure polymerization of ethylene using TiCl 4 supported on Mg(OEt) 2 or TiCl 3 .Y 3 AlCl 3 /Bu 3 Al or catalysts and, as deactivators, calcium stearate of sodium naphthoate.
