1535375 Laminates MONSANTO CO 3 March 1976 [3 March 1975] 8453/76 Heading B5N A fabric comprises one and only one layer of bulk fibres more than 50% of which have lengths of 10 mm. or less, one or two layers of reinforcing fibres having lengths greater than 10 mm. and a bonding agent distributed substantially throughout the layers and bonding them together, the layers being substantially parallel to each other with the layer of bulk fibres sandwiched between the two layers of reinforcing fibres when two such layers are present, the weight of the layer of bulk fibres being at least 8 gm. per sq. m. of the fabric area. The fabric may be made by distributing a bonding agent substantially uniformly through a structure comprising a layer of the bulk fibres having a weight of at least 16 gm. per sq. m. sandwiched between two reinforcing layers and setting the bonding agent. In a preferred method, the bonding agent is distributed, the structure subjected to controlled heating to lower the concentration of the bonding agent at predetermined planar locations within the bulk fibre layer and in a direction generally parallel to the reinforcing layers, setting the bonding agent and splitting the structure by drawing the reinforcing layers in divergent directions to split the bulk fibre layer. The reinforcing fibres may be of cotton, silk, modified cellulosic, nylon, acrylic, modacrylic, polyester, polyolefin, polyacetal, viscose or cuprammonium rayon and may be knitted, woven, non-woven, spun bonded, spun laced, needle punched or curled and the bulk fibres of leather, cotton, linen, hemp, silk, wool, wood pulp, rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, polyester, acrylic or modacrylic, many suitable resinous binding agents being specified. |
