Laminar water cooling of the rolled strip is carried out between roll stands in the finishing train of a continuous hot strip rolling mill, where minimum tension is exerted on the strip travelling through the six roll stands in the finishing train. Each of the six stands is driven by a d.c. motor using tension controllers to maintain a low tension of only 0.2-0.5kg/mm2 on the strip. The result is that the strip travels in a horizontal plane through a water bath so optimum cooling is achieved. There is no need to use loops of strip between the stands. Such looping entails the use of additional plant and measuring appts., and it is very difficult to achieve uniform cooling, whereas the invention uses laminar water flow which ensures uniform cooling.
|
