The dies used for extruding metals are subject to wear so that the bore increases in dia. and an annular gap appears between the mandrel and the bore of the die. Scale builds up in this gap which is difficult to remove. The split spring ring of rectangular cross-section is used as a de-scaling tool. The free dia. of the ring is greater than the bore of the die and the radial thickness of the ring varies in such a way that there is a uniform bending moment around the circumference. The gap between the ends of the ring prevents pressure building up in the bore of the die when the ring is being pushed through.
