Bismuth germanate prepn. - by direct reaction of oxide(s), isostatic pressing or compaction with temporary binder and sintering

Polycrystalline material of formula Bi12GeO2o is mfd. by mixing in aq. medium, oxides of Bi and Ge in predetermined amts. grinding and drying the prod., shaping either directly by isostatic pressing, or after adding an organic temporary binder by pressing in a mould and eliminating the binder, by heating, and sintering the material to 700-800 degrees C under a pressure of 0.25-0.5 tonnes/cm2 for one to several hours. Used for detection of radiation, esp. X-rays. Plates or discs suitable for viewing by X-rays of regions of large dimensions can be made.
