1534347 Liquid transfer between containers BAXTER TRAVENOL LABORATORIES Inc 24 Feb 1976 [12 March 1975] 07133/76 Heading B8T Two sterile containers, e.g. blood bags, 10, 12 have flexible fluid transfer tubes 15, 16 respectively, each tube having a diaphragm 30 spaced from the free end thereof. A doubleended, hollow-spike 26 fits tightly into the bore of each tube 15, 16 and, when so fitted, the spike and that part of the tubes 15, 16 extendng from each diaphragm 30 is sterilized, e.g. by heating for one minute at 250‹ C. in an electric oven 58a. The tubes 15, 16 are then axially collapsed so that the spike 26 fractures both diaphragms 30 and sterile contents can then pass from one container to the other, after which one, or both, of the tubes 15, 16 are sealed, e.g. at 61 by a dielectric heat sealer thereby maintaining the sterile integrity of at least one of the containers 10, 12 after entry thereto. Preferably the tubes 15, 16 have silicone rubber connectors 21, 22 each defining flanges 31, 33, 35 and the diaphragm 30. A brass clip 38, provided on each connector 21, 22, has a cylindrical portion 50 extending between the flanges 31 and 33, a strip 46 passing through an aperture 58 in the flange 33 and a second cylindrical portion 48. The clips 38 prevent axial collapse of the parts 60 of the connections 21, 22 until tabs 52 are pulled (Fig. 5) so that the clips are bent about lines of weakness (not shown) in the strips 46. As seen in Fig. 1, the blood bags 10, 12 are provided with several fluid transfer tubes 14 to 18 while, in the embodiment of Fig. 6 (not shown), a single tube branches out into several fluid transfer tubes. |
