1534579 Pipes; pipe couplings AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc 3 May 1976 [2 May 1975] 18009/76 Headings F2P and F2G A pipe portion suitable for a flexible coupling includes a fibre-reinforced elastomer layer 42, 44 wherein helically oriented fibres disposed at 45-75 degrees with respect to the axis and having an elastic modulus within the range 4À22 Î 10<5> Kg cm<-2> are set in an elastomer binder of material having an elastic modulus, at 100% elongation of at least 1À75 Kg cm<-2> and less than that of the fibres; a tensile strength of at least 21 Kg cm<-2> and a hardness as measured on a Shore A durometer of 15-90. The coupling is further characterized in having a wall thickness/diameter ratio of 0À006 D-0À09 D, where D is in the range 10 cm-50 cm; a column expansibility (i.e. circumferential strain per unit axial force per unit circumference) of at least 1À12 Î 10<-3> cm Kg<-1> and a transverse shear resistance of 0À12 cm of pipe deflection or less per cm of diameter under a shear load of 26À787 D Kg. As shown (Fig. 4) under an optional outer cover 40 is disposed a layer 42 of helically wound filaments in a matrix of elastomeric binder 43; a second filament layer 44 wound in an opposite sense to layer 42 is also imbedded in the matrix 43; the two filament layers preferably separated by a layer 50 (Fig. 5) of elastomeric (e.g. polyurethane) foam; and an innermost liner 47 of, e.g. thermoplastic or thermosetting material integral with or distinct from the inner filament layer 44, and defining an annular sealing lip 49 towards each axial end of the coupling. The fibres may be of steel, stainless steel, copper aluminium alloy, boron, graphite E-glass, C-glass, S-glass or aramid fibres and may be formed as filament, strand, roving, yard or cordage. The binder may be formed of a natural or synthetic polymeric elastomer, e.g. natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyether urethanes with or without further reinforcing fillers such as silica smoke or carbon black; preferably a plasticized reaction product of a polyester-urethane prepolymer and a triol curing compound is used which is also suitable for the liner layer. The invention extends to a coupling formed as above receiving two pipe ends and adhesively bonded thereto. The pipe ends may be roughened or grooved and auxiliary clamping means, e.g. reinforcing rings, clamps, may be included. |
