Axial thrust on two adjacent mainshaft gears 60, 62 is accommodated by an assembly 87 comprising a thrust member 104 fixed to the mainshaft and having surfaces which abut surfaces 60b and 62b of the gears 60, 62. Axial thrust on a gear 60 or 62 clutched to the mainshaft towards the other gear is thus through surfaces rotating at the same speed. Snap rings 112 and 114 limit the degree of engagement of a clutch and also react against forces tending to move the clutched gear away from the unclutched gear. A snap ring 102 and a groove 103 limit the relative axial movement between the gears.</p> |
