Paper products are sized with a sizing emulsion formed in the absence of high shearing forces and under normal pressures and containing 80 - 97 parts of a substituted cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride, 3 - 20 parts of a polyoxyalkylene alkyl or polyoxyalkylene alkyl-aryl ether or the corresponding mono- or diester, and water. The sizing step is accomplished by intimately dispersing the size emulsion within the paper stock prior to its passing through the drying stage of the paper-making operation in an amount which provides a concentration of the substituted cyclic dicarboxylic acid anhydride of 0.01 - 2.0%, based on the dry fiber weight. The improved size properties of the resulting paper product, e.g., resistance to water or acidic ink solutions, are achieved in this method using a smaller amount of size as compared to prior art sizing methods.
|
