An impregnating liquid for use in the preparation of a catalyst for purifying combustion exhaust gas which contains as additives at least one of an organic nitrogen compound of a specified class or phosphorous compounds; and, if desired, at least one carboxylic acid selected from organic saturated dicarboxylic acids and organic oxycarboxylic acids; the catalyst is suitably based on a metal such as platinum or palladium; catalyst elements and catalyst packs are also provided.
