In an appliance for making coffee and the like, having a water reservoir, a flow heater, and a filtering device with a receptable and a filter holder, measuring out the amounts of water and coffee in the desired ratio may present problems. An embodiment is proposed in which the filter holder is coupled to an element which responds to the water level in the reservoir, for example with the aid of a lever mechanism. The mechanism may be provided with an indication means and an adjusting facility for varying the above-mentioned ratio.
