The machine has a former which receives wire blanks and bends them into an arcuate shape. A transfer mechanism receives the formed arches and pushes them into the soil. The transfer mechanism may include an endless belt or chain the latter having a downward run (20) opposing the direction of travel of the machine. A retainer holds the shaped wires adjacent to the downward run and is displaceable to drive them into the soil. The retainer is pref. a second endless belt or chain (21) with a run (24) parallel to the downward run of the first. The belts or chains are driven in synchronism, and include gripping elements (25) for the shaped wires (63, 64).
