A display comprises a reference voltage generating circuit for generating reference voltages used for converting the digital gray-scale level value of an input image into an analog voltage and an FRC section for displaying a gray-scale image corresponding to the gray-scale of the image by interpolating a gray-scale level which cannot be displayed by any reference voltage by an FRC method when the number of reference voltages generated is smaller than the maximum gray-scale level of the input image. The intervals between the reference voltages generated are small for the intermediate gray-scale level much influenced by the brightness difference and the visibility and are large for the low gray-scale level not much influenced by the brightness difference and the visibility compared to the intermediate gray-scale level. With this, when gray-scale display is carried out by using frame rate control (FRC), image degradation such as flickering or noise at the gray-scale level at which the visibility is high and at the gray-scale level at which the difference in brightness between the gradations is large can be prevented.
