Axle load monitor for vehicles - has mounting blocks welded to axle using template prior to fitting transducers

The load monitor comprises two support blocks (2, 3) each of which has a raised centre section (4, 5) running transverse to the direction of the vehicle axle (1). Across these stepped sections is screwed a strain gauge strip (6) acting as load transducer. Each mounting block has a cutaway in its base which runs in the longitudinal axis of the axle. The blocks are welded to the axle along the edges of which run parallel to this cutaway section (9). Initially, the blocks are aligned on the axle whilst screwed to a welding gauge. After fixing, the gauge or template is removed and the strain gauge strip is screwed into position. This type of fixing method, unlike those using a support plate for the transducers, avoids prestressing of the strain gauge which can result from the welding process.
