Thermonuclear microexplosion is produced by projecting a laser, electron or ion beam, or a particle beam, onto a curved, concave wall. The energy of the beam, or a portion of it, is converted into a shock wave and focussed back onto the particle to detonate it.Pref. the density and atomic weight of the wall material changes continuously through the thickness of the wall, or alternatively the wall is composed of layers of differing density and atomic weight. More specifically, the wall is wholly or partly composed of isotopes of uranium thorium or lithium.
