A damper, or shock absorber having a piston 32 disposed within a working chamber 44, 46, the piston forming a valve having a valve disc 80 and a first supporting member 104, a second supporting member 106 disposed radially inwardly from the first supporting member and third annular supporting member 108 disposed between the first and second supporting members, the third annular supporting member defining a support surface. The valve disc abuts the first and second supporting members with a clearance being formed between the valve disc and the support surface of the third annular supporting member. Also independently claimed is a base valve assembly disposed between a working chamber and a reservoir chamber, the valve assembly comprising a valve body defining a fluid passage and having a first land, a second land disposed radially inwardly from the first land with a support surface disposed between the first and second lands and a valve disc which abuts the first and second lands and forms a clearance between the valve disc and the support surface. |
