1534259 Inserting electrical components into circuit boards UNIVERSAL INSTRUMENTS CORP 20 May 1977 [24 May 1976] 21399/77 Heading B3A Apparatus for inserting electronic components into a circuit board has an inserter assembly 200 rotatable from a drive position to a feed position where a feeding sub-assembly 400 feeds a component along the longitudinal axis of the inserter assembly into the inserter and subsequently the inserter assembly is rotated back to the drive position where it is driven along its longitudinal axis to insert the component into the board. The inserter assembly comprises a pair of pivotally mounted guides 208, a pair of blades 204 and a plunger 226 all of which are mounted on a slide 332, Fig. 6. The inserter assembly is rotated to and from its feed position (shown in phantom in Fig. 2) by a pneumatic cylinder which is connected to a shaft of the assembly by a rack and pinion. In operation, an electronic component is fed down a shoot 108, 110 to the feed sub-assembly 400 and is retained therein by stops 430, 432 and fingers 462, 464 on spreaders 420, 422 pivotally mounted at 416 and 418 respectively. After the inserter assembly has been rotated to its feed position, a piston 460 advances a slide 442 which causes cam surfaces 454 thereon to pivot the spreaders 420, 422 and cause fingers 444, 446 to spread the leads of the component. Further movement of the slide 442 causes a platform 448 to contact the bottom of the component so that it is clamped between the platform 448 and plunger 226 and transferred to the inserter assembly 200 where it is held between the blades 204. The assembly 200 is now rotated to its drive position and its slide 332 lowered so that the guides 208 close around the blades 204 and come to rest on the circuit board. The plunger 226 is now lowered to push the component into holes in the board. |
