CEPHALOSPORIN-TYPE ANTIBIOTIC COMPOSITION

A stable form of sodium 7-(D-2-formyloxy-2-phenyl-acetamido)-3-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthio methyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate is prepared by a process which comprises the steps of (a) reacting 7-(D-2-formyloxy-2-phenylacetamido)-3-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthiom ethyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid with a sodium salt of an organic acid in the presence of an organic solvent; (b) separating the sodium 7-(D-2-formyloxy-2-phenyl-acetamido)-3-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthio methyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate in dry form from the reaction mixture, optionally recrystallized, and dried; and (c) blending the dry sodium 7-(D-2-formyloxy-2-phenyl-acetamido)-3-(1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthio methyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate with between about 0.1 mole and 1.2 moles of an alkali metal carbonate or tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane per mole of said sodium 7-(D-2-formyloxy-2-phenylacetamido)-3- (1-methyl-1H-tetrazole-5-ylthiomethyl)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate salt. Aqueous solutions of this medicament remain clear and colorless on standing (in contrast to aqueous solutions of the above cephalosporin antibiotic compound alone, which develop turbidity on standing), and therefore are suitable for I.V. solutions. The antibiotic is of value in treating bacterial infections.
