An apparatus for concealing an error in an MPEG2 system is provided to restore a macro block through error concealment if there is the error in an MPEG TS bit stream, calculate a distortion value for a border difference between the restored macro block and a previously restored macro block, and restore a screen or discard data by comparing the distortion value with a limit value, thereby reducing influence on an error transfer process. An apparatus for concealing an error in an MPEG2(Moving Picture Experts Group2) system comprises a tuner(11) and an MPEG main chip(12). The MPEG main chip calculates a distortion value between a restored macro block and an adjacent macro block when there is the error in an MPEG TS(Transport Stream) bit stream transmitted from the tuner. The MPEG main chip restores the macro block by using a difference between a macro block to be coded and a coded macro block.
