The fork lift truck is mounted on three wheels (A, B, C). The truck is steered by turning two wheels (A, B) about a vertical axis. To avoid any skidding of the tyres the relationship between the angle (alpha) turned through by the wheel (A) and the angle (beta) turned through by the wheel (B) is such that the ratio of tan alpha to tan beta is equal to the ratio of d to c. This relationship between the angles alpha and beta can be effected by using a toothed cam driven by a pinion which can slide in guiding slot. The pinions are connected by a chain drive to a common jack which is operated by the truck driver. This mechanism is particularly important when the angles alpha and beta are relatively large so that the truck turns in a small circle.
|
